7 Ways to Declutter Your Home Before the Holidays

The holidays are approaching fast. For many of us, the holiday season means dealing with an influx of visitors and gifts – and no matter how much you might love the festivities, it’s never any fun to end up with a cluttered house afterward.

You can avoid holiday clutter by taking action ahead of time. These simple tips will help you clean out your house now to make room for new gifts later.

1. Get rid of toys your kids never play with.
If your kids have certain toys they never play with, you might be able to get rid of them quietly without causing a fuss. If you think the kids will notice, ask them to help you out. Tell them they can keep a certain number of toys, and let them pick the ones they want. You can donate any toys that do not have any wear and tear.

2. Go through your kids’ closets.
Children outgrow clothes fast, so there’s a good chance that some of your kids’ clothes no longer fit. Get rid of any clothes that are too small, stained, or ripped.

3. Clean out your pantry.
Get ready for holiday cooking and baking by making space in your pantry. Get rid of any food that’s gone bad, and use up food that’s nearing its expiration date. This also gives you a good opportunity to make a list of ingredients you’ll need for holiday cooking.

4. Simplify your wardrobe.
Go through your closet and get rid of clothes and shoes that you don’t wear. Toss items that are damaged beyond repair, and donate items that don’t fit you or that you just don’t like.

5. Go through your bedroom.
If your bedroom is already overflowing with stuff, it will be hard to find a place to keep new gifts. Clean out your personal space and get rid of anything you don’t need or use on a regular basis.

6. Rethink your decor.
If your house is full of knickknacks, consider whether you really want to keep them around. Simplifying your home decor can make your house seem a lot less cluttered when it’s time to throw holiday parties. At the very least, consider boxing up your decorative trinkets and putting them away until the holiday season is over.

7. Declutter your bookshelves.
Do you or your kids have a lot of books you never read? If so, consider gathering them up and donating them. Your shelves will be free to hold other things if necessary, and you’ll have plenty of room to store any new books you receive as gifts.

The holidays are more enjoyable when your house is organized and calm. Get a head start on your holiday decluttering today, and you’ll be able to enjoy a clutter-free home throughout November and December.
